When I was at my lowest point a few years ago one big struggle for me was never having money for any of the things I wanted to do. I was stuck at home, we only had one car, I was with the kiddos ALL day EVERY day. Getting a traditional job wasn’t really an option because of how expensive daycare is and how many kids I have. At that point I would have had to make $15 an hour JUST to cover daycare. Now that I’ve added a few more kiddos to my brood I’m up to having to make $20-25 an hour to cover daycare costs only. Fat chance of that happening! At the time I couldn’t even afford to order a pizza and felt guilty if I spent $5 on a tube of cheap drugstore mascara. Don’t even get me started on my pathetic wardrobe! Not being able to even get myself some basic necessities, like a new bra, was a huge source of pain, stress, and sadness. I decided I absolutely had to make a change by bringing more money into our family.
Making Money as a Stay at Home Mom
I’ve done many things to bring a little extra income into our family. I started a blog with affiliate links. I did freelance graphic design and photo editing. I looked into companies that would help me teach online. I was bringing in a little, but it really wasn’t much and didn’t begin to pay for the effort I was putting into it. Many times over several months I half-heartedly looked into different direct sales companies, but none of them truly ignited my passions. I just couldn’t justify the start-up cost for something I wasn’t sure about.
Let’s be honest here, there is a lot of negativity surrounding direct sales. Many people, myself included at the time, think they’re all about high pressure sales tactics, spamming your friends, and make a bunch of money for the CEO while leaving the consultants high and dry struggling to make their monthly quotas. Didn’t sound any better, and maybe a bit worse, than what I was already doing! Then I started really looking at some of my friends who were NOT being spammy and WERE making a pretty good amount of money. Clearly there was something about this direct sales thing that had some potential, I just had to learn how to tap into it. I began to do some research into different companies and how they worked. I realized that most of them weren’t the Ponzi scheme I feared, and that they actually took pretty good care of their consultants.
Choosing a Direct Sales Company
Once I realized that there were several quality companies out there that I would be proud to be a part of I had to choose which one I wanted to join. The most important thing for me personally was that I needed to love the product. I can’t sell something if I’m not excited about it. The best sales reps are people who truly love and believe in their product. They don’t’ need to be spammy or have high pressure tactics because their use and love of the product is what makes it sell. Second it had to be sold at a price point that I could get behind. You can’t convince others to part with their cash for a product if it isn’t something you would personally be willing to spend your money on. Third I needed to know and believe in the company values. I wanted to know that the owner had a purpose bigger than just making money. I needed a mission statement, and I wanted to see how they were using their company to bless lives and improve the world. Fourth I needed to feel comfortable with the compensation plan. Ultimately this is a business and it needs to make me money! I just wasn’t ok with a 5% or even 15% return. I needed a bigger piece of the pie!
My final Choice
There are a lot of great companies out there, but ultimately I couldn’t do them all. While I really love several I found that LuLaRoe felt like the best fit for me. Their products are excellent quality and their patterns always fresh and unique. I absolutely love their mission statement. I feel like their leaders are very hands on and that I am really part of a community. Commissions are high and the money making potential is HUGE. My upline is currently building a new home with her LuLaRoe income and several on my team have been able to quit their full time jobs and be home with their kiddos because of LuLaRoe. In addition I have also added on Paparazzi Accessories an DoTerra as side businesses because I love their products so much.
What are Your Options?
There are tons of options for direct sales companies. In future posts I will be interviewing reps from several of them so that you can see how the company works and pick the one that is best for you. Just click on the company name below to be taken to the post about that company. I will update this list as I interview each consultant. If there is a company you want to know about that isn’t on the list please let me know in the comments so that I can find you some information!
